Kapische is derived from the Old Slavonic “kap,” meaning “representation” or “idol”. A kapische is a cultic structure constructed by Eastern and Baltic Slavs prior to the Christian era. References to the kapische can be found in Metropolitan Hilarion’s Discourse on Law and Grace from the 11th century, as well as in other historical sources. Kapische is also written as “Kapischche”, “Kapishte”, and in Russian “Капище”.
