The Portal Tomb of Killiney (also known as The Brehon’s Chair or The Druid’s Judgement Seat) is located west of Killiney Hill Road, in the townland of Killiney, south of Dún Laoghaire, and north of Bray in County Dublin, Ireland. Portal Tombs are megalithic structures found in the British Isles, characterized by two equally tall, upright stones with a doorstone in between, forming the front of a chamber covered partially by a massive capstone.
The monument is likely the remains of a Portal Tomb that was once surrounded by a stone circle. Some vertical stones remain, one of which resembles a chair-like formation. Unfortunately, the “chair” of Killiney has been subject to destructive forces. In 1972, the Ballybrack Guild of the ICA attempted to have the monument officially recognized. Interestingly, there have been discussions about the authenticity of the Killiney monument. Historian William F. Wakeman (1822–1900) declared it a forgery, while antiquarian Charles Vallencey Pratt (1831–1907) believed it to be genuine.
There are two Druid or Judge’s Chairs in County Dublin; the other one is Brehon’s Chair or Taylor’s Grange in Rathfarnham near Tallaght. Nearby, you can find the Dolmen of Brennanstown and the Portal Tomb of Ballybrack.
