Marktsteen Oldenzaal

The Marktsteen (market stone) in Oldenzaal, also called the Grote Steen (Big Stone), or Tamfana Steen (Tamfana Stone) is a big rock that was previously located on the Tankenberg, the highest hill in the region. It is believed that the stone, and the site of the Tankenberg, was a site connect to the Germanic Goddess Tamfana. The stone was probably moved to the town's centre to prevent the persistent pagan practices in the early middle ages.
