In Roman mythology, Attis (or Atys), is a young and beautiful shepherd from Phrygia, with whom the goddess Cybele fell in love. After promising to be faithful to her forever, Attis broke her oath, falling in love with a nymph. Angry, the goddess Cybele took her mind and, in a fit of madness, Attis self-mutilated. He was metamorphosed by Cybele into a pine, although Ovid claims he transformed himself into a pine.
