One side of the Altuna runestone illustrates a legend found in the Hymiskviða, the “Lay of Hymir,” in the Poetic Edda. The illustration depicts the god Thor fishing for Jǫrmungandr, the Midgard Serpent. The encounter between Thor and Jǫrmungandr appears to have been a popular motif in Scandinavian art.
