The Altuna Runestone (Swedish Altunastenen, (listed as U 1161 in Rundata) is a Viking Age runestone (800–1050 AD) located in Altuna in the Uppland province of Sweden.
The Altuna runestone is one of the few runestones with an illustration from Norse mythology that has been preserved. One side of the Altuna runestone illustrates a legend found in the Hymiskviða, the “Lay of Hymir,” in the Poetic Edda. The illustration depicts the god Thor fishing for Jǫrmungandr, the Midgard Serpent. The encounter between Thor and Jǫrmungandr appears to have been a popular motif in Scandinavian art.
